The Irish government rolling out the red carpet for Donald Trump to is an insult to all the victims of Trump and his regime, including:
- the women who have been victimised by his predatory behaviour and survivors generally. Trump is mentioned 38,000 times in Epstein files and is friends with fellow far-right rapist Conor McGregor.
- The Palestinians murdered in the Zionist genocide he has armed and backed, like his predecessor, Joe Biden, and all the people of Gaza who live under his colonial “board of peace”
- The Iranians massacred in his imperialist war
- The migrants in the US who have been terrorised by his fascist ICE agency.
- To Trans people — the currentTrump administration has seen 834 anti-trans bills; 154 are federal bills.
This week, the far-right AfD in Germany made a breakthrough in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, at 44% — another terrifying warning of the growing fascist threat
Since his first election in 2016, Trump has emboldened and actively encouraged this threat globally.
Similarly, the ‘manosphere’ and the all-pervasive online misogyny are being worsened by Trump and his supporters and fellow billionaires in big tech.
Trump represents a declining capitalist US empire. Feeling its power being undermined, its emperor-in-chief is lashing out at all directions. He has turned the screws on the people of Cuba, kidnapped Venezuela’s President and threatened to invade Greenland.
Our planet is burning, and Trump is throwing petrol on the fire. He has given the go-ahead for the unlimited extraction of fossil fuels for AI.
Irish government and US empire
With the visit of Trump, we are once again witnessing the Irish capitalist establishment prostrating itself in front of the US empire.
This is the government that is bending backwards to facilitate big tech and its data centres that are killing our planet.
A government that watered down the Occupied Territories Bill at the behest of US big business and this current US administration.
A government that has continued to allow the US warplanes through Shannon Airport as US imperialism wages war on Iran and supplies weapons for the genocide in Palestine.
Now it is also taking a leaf from the Trumpian playbook with its new rules regarding citizenship, which amount to racist, dog-whistle politics against vulnerable migrant communities and racialised people generally.
There is nothing new in any of this. Irish capitalism has always been subservient to imperialist powers, be it Britain, the US or those in the EU.
The rotten soil of capitalism
Capitalism is creating the fertile soil for the fascistic, far-right ideas for Trump to grow. There is no greater personification of this vile system than this obnoxious billionaire with his racist, queerphobic, misogynistic ideas and colonial outlook.
As this dystopian system drives us towards climate catastrophe, genocide and fascism, we must urgently pull the emergency brake on its rule.
Every day, our activists in Solidarity do all we can to aid and uplift the building of people power movements from below — against data centres being built in our communities; campaigns of students and workers on our campuses to stamp out racism; for workers’ rights; and for an anti-racist feminist movement from below to end gender based violence.
Building such from-below movements must be interwoven with the building of a massive left and socialist political alternative. Solidarity stands for deep-rooted socialist change, and a break with the system of the rule of billionaires and trillionaires.
A society based on solidarity and compassion can be built when society’s wealth is collectively owned and democratically controlled, ending want and destruction and meeting our needs and protecting our ecosystem. This is a struggle we build in solidarity with working-class and oppressed people’s socialist organisations globally.
